Manila Bulletin online | Christian Bautista: Incredible in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The country with the world’s largest Muslim population is truly becoming Christian territory.

For years now, Filipinos in the motherland have been hearing about it: “Christian Bautista hits number one in the Indonesian charts.” Or, “Christian Bautista shoots big-budget film in Indonesia.” Or, “Christian Bautista duet with Indonesian superstar sells a million downloads.”

Christian achieves this, achieves that in Indonesia. Really?

Bulletin Entertainment took the five-hour flight from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to verify if everything is as it is and without exaggeration. A day before our interview with the Filipino singer, we asked some of the Indonesians we met at the Wayang Museum, Monas, Pasaraya mall, Mulia hotel and Ragunan Zoo if they have “at the very least, heard” of Christian B.

At all times, the Indonesians gave us a look as if we’ve just asked them if they’ve worn batik (Indonesia’s national costume).

Without being prompted, they cleared their throats and broke into song — a line from Christian’s signature hit: “’Coz there’s something in the way…you look at me…”

Do they know Christian is Filipino?

“Yes,” they said, pointing out that the last Filipino to have made such an impact in Indonesia was Maribeth back in the early ‘90s with her hit song “Denpasar Moon” [Denpasar being the capital city of Bali, Indonesia].

“But Mister Christian bigger,” many of them added in reverential tone...
